Be it ever so humble...

Ahhh, it's good to be back home.

But I always like going to visit the in-laws. Firstly, it was nice to be in some drier air. Granted, they're in the middle of an ongoing drought in North Georgia, so it's kind of selfish of me to be revelling in it, but its still nice. Secondly, it's nice to have someone else make breakfast, and watch my child. Again, I know it's selfish, but it's nice to sit out on the porch reading a book, knowing that your child is safe inside, if a little over-indulged.

Whenever we go there, Ray and I always start asking ourselves if maybe we should move there to be closer to his family. To see his Nana more often, to spend more time with his parents, to have a baby sitter who wouldn't mind dropping by the house on a Saturday afternoon. We talk about the mountains, and the scenery, how great it looks in the fall.

And then I start looking at houses on-line, and marvel at the low house prices, and the giant lots, and I keep telling myself it's really a very short drive to Chattanooga.

And then I start perusing the job sites.

And then reality creeps in and reminds me that we'd probably already be living there if there were jobs to be had in our field. Oops.

Living in the Chattanooga area would put us closer to my family, too, but at the moment there's just no way to make it work.

When we moved in to this house, I told myself, "This is it." I didn't want to make another long distance move. I didn't want to uproot my child anymore.

But I have to say, if an offer came from a radio station up that way, I would be open to it.

Always one little hitch in the plans, isn't there? Not really work you can telecommute for is it.

I apologize if you've already talked about this and I've missed it, but what exactly does Ray do? For some reason I'm thinking he's a news director who also is on the air. Am I even close? And do you both work for Atlanta stations now, or in another town.

Because Chattanooga is a pretty big market, isn't it? Seems like this could be a possibility in the future somehow, even if now it isn't workable.

Ahhh sweetie I know what you mean.
When you have kids it's so good to be near family.
We fell completely in love with Dartmouth, but I know realistically I would miss my family and friends too much to move away.

Who knows what the future holds though?

Welcome home.

I know the feeling to some degree. I live in Paris but I'm an Englishman and miss many aspects of life back home; and yet there are things here I love.

Ah, the agonies of choice!

I sympathise Jen. I know how hard it is when your family are a long way off. And when kids come along, those support systems are needed more than ever. It's not easy.

I love that name, Chattanooga. Makes me want to get up and sing!

Welcome back. There's a reason why house prices are lower in rural Arkansas than Los Angeles, and you just explained it.

Hiya Jen,
The first step in getting what you want is imagining it. The second step is desiring it and the third, is being grateful for it. You're 2/3 there.

Diana Sure,I could telecommute, if someone thought I was worth enough to put forty-grand worth of equipment in my house and set up an ISDN line. Rush Limbaugh broadcasts from his house. But I can't.

RC Ray is a news director and morning show host here in Savannah (we're about three hours southeast of Atlanta). Savannah is a tiny market (158). Chattanooga isn't a whole lot bigger(around 100). Atlanta is market...I think it's seven now, but I do know it's in the top ten. Chattanooga is a lot like Savannah. People stay forever in their media jobs until they die. And it doesn't have a lot in the way of News/Talk stations. Atlanta was an option, but it's just too expensive. Ray would probably have to either break into TV (tough go) or become someone's spokesperson or communications director for us to make it to Chattanooga.

Jo We've always lived so far away from everyone, it would be bizaree to only be a short drive.

Dumdad And it is a bit of agony.

Mya Chattanooga is a pretty cool place, it's right on the river. And they do have the old Chattanooga Choo-Choo which is now stationary and is used as a hotel. You can actually sleep in the refurbished private cars.

Willowtree Well, I guess I could always take up organic farming or something. But the soil is a little rocky up there.

Grand View Oh, I'm grateful for what I have, and would be grateful to be there, too. Actually, having lived through some very rough times, I'm glad just to have a roof over my head, and food in my belly.
